Who here has a fool-proof guide they can share? 😊 Preferably zero waste but at this point frankly the fool-proof part is much more important.

Do you already have a starter? It takes a while to build your own starter. Mine took about a year. YMMV.

I am starting my starter today. 😂 But I read that it can be ready in 7 days, isn’t that true?

Well, there’s “ready” and then there’s thriving. I spent a year making mediocre, too-flat sourdough, and then something switched on and the starter became more active. I’m sure it can be done in less time, but it’s always easier to get a starter from someone else. They always have tons to give away.

Making the starter is pretty straightforward. It just might take some time or it might just die out in which case keep trying.

Once you’re ready to make bread, you gotta figure out how to make it work for you: your climate, sourness preference, and fitting it into your schedule. It’s not straightforward right off the bat. But once you get your process down, it’s pretty repeatable.

I'm not a pro and have made tons of crappy loaves, but the easiest for me has been King Arthur baking's website, from making a starter to using the discard in recipes I use their rustic loaf and the extra tangy recipes. The Sourdough School has a great book by Vanessa Kimbell on the mechanics of it all, so it all kind of clicked when I was actually doing the bread making. I think just powering through the sad loaves and learning every time is key...and DON'T rush it, it's going to take all day 🤷‍♀️. Hopefully this helps!
