Back in the early days of the forming of the US and through the 1800s and even up to maybe mid-1900s, the local sheriff was a standup person for the most part and a good buffer between your district and the feds.
That's at least in part likely because the sole sheriff was out gunned and outnumbered and knew he would he put down without hesitation if he didnt stand up for the county. These days, no such thing as a good sheriff. They all enforce unjust laws.
