Please explain how it is obvious when you climb a mountain?

this is one of those things you have to do to understand it
you can't see all of the curve of the horizon from an airplane, but even there it's clear that the horizontal is above the horizon
top of a mountain, especially on an island, if you don't notice the horizon is below the level of your eyes as they point directly sideways you must have some kind of freakish eye lens distortion or brain problem

Just so I have this straight Mount Everest is the highest peak at 29029 ft above sea level and assuming for a moment you could see water from there you would be able to discern a curve. Planes cruise 32000 ft and higher and you can't from a plane? Wouldn't the curve be more apparent the higher up you are?
