I’m not sure I agree with how this is worded. A subsidy is when one person is taxed and the money is given to another. The farmers are protesting having to pay a fuel tax.
Free trade agreements are fine unless the goods being traded are subsidized. In this case, the importing countries are taxing common people and redistributing to the exporting countries. A small portion of said funds are given to the export countries farmers. Just enough to make competition impossible.
This article makes it sound like the farmers want something they haven’t earned. When all they really want is a free and fair economy.
