Someone here called the notion of privilege ridiculous today. I can’t remember their exact words and promptly muted but do people not understand privilege? Is that still a thing in 2024?

If you are still denying the existence of privilege then you lack basic humanity. If you are American and deny that you have privilege over humans (including children) working in awful conditions around the world so that you can have basic goods then you are ignorant. If you deny that you have privilege over those being wiped out in genocide then you are ignorant. This list just goes on and on. You have privileges in so many ways. And people born in countries better than the US have privileges over you. Socialized medicine is a fucking privilege. Access to food and housing in countries that take care of their homeless is a fucking privilege.

How are people still denying privilege? You are benefiting from the system that maintains it whether you acknowledge the existence of it or not.

Privilege doesn’t mean you never suffered.

People push back on the concept of privilege because it has been used by dishonest actors who want to take something from those who have something.

Privilege is an inherent part of life and

goes far beyond being an American.

If you are healthy, you are privileged.

If you are fed, you are privileged.

If you have positive relations with others, you are privileged.

If you have an enjoyable profession, you are privileged.

If you have security for those you love, you are privileged.

If you are alive to enjoy the glory of life and creation, you are privileged.

Many people wish to tear people down - instead build others up. Instead of looking for the privilege in others, find it in yourself. Instead of focusing on how you’ve been disadvantaged, find things to be grateful for.

Anyone who denies privilege as a reality is certainly being dishonest or ignorant. But it’s also a defense mechanism against socialist thinking.
