It's kind of funny because it seems as though GMRS is less used than amateur radio because I don't know of any repeaters anywhere near me for GMRS, but there are amateur radio repeaters all over the place. I've had my GMRS and amateur radio licenses for years, and I think I've used GMRS like two or three times.
