He spent years among the Desert Fathers, absorbing their ascetic practices and teachings. Later, he founded two monasteries near Marseilles, bringing Eastern monasticism to the West. His writings, particularly the "Institutes" and "Conferences," became foundational texts for Western monasticism, shaping the Rule of St. Benedict and guiding countless souls toward contemplative prayer.
