Yup, same protocols, but “nobody” wanted to run big public relays/servers for free so most users just hopped on the default Bluesky one (and a handful of what became the popular Mastodon servers), thereby centralizing a decentralized system.
Once again, convenience > security.
It’s worse than that. Even if you run a personal server it is just a content server for the main bluesky instance.

Really? Damn… The last time I played with that stuff you had to depend on other server operators being willing to let yours connect, but nothing like this. I wonder if Bluesky added their own special sauce on top of the open source protocols? 🤷‍♂️
Me too, I discovered that was not the case when I saw their own users complaining months ago. The decentralization they talk about is the one that you often hear in corporate speak, not real decentralization.
