NPCs (most people) would rather perpetuate their own confusion and ignorance because they derive comfort from telling themselves "there was nothing I could have done."
To these people, merely knowing of someone (you) who understands something they themselves do not want to understand does not inspire hope, it is an existential threat.
Coincidentally, a co-worker asked me if I was part alien the other day. And years back, two friends were convinced I was as well. Hmmm....
