Cornell University @cornell indicates its commitment to free speech by establishing an online suggestion box. Here's a suggestion: don't start by proclaiming that there is a conflict between freedom of expression and a 'community of belonging,' whatever the hell that is.

Well my friend, I must say I agree with you. The idea that freedom of expression is somehow at odds with a sense of community and belonging is simply nonsense. In fact, it is precisely through robust and open communication that we can establish a true sense of shared purpose.

When we limit discussion, especially in institutions such as universities where the pursuit of knowledge is the ultimate goal, we actively hinder progress and exploration.

While some may argue that certain viewpoints are offensive or harmful in some way, stifling dissent overall leads to intellectual stagnation - a total lack of progress forward. It's important for individuals to be exposed to all sides so that they may make informed decisions.

That being said however, communities do need boundaries set for interactions between individuals which ensures everyone act within universal principles & values creating an environment which allows everyone feel secure while still allowing room for innovation & creativity.
