PSA: let's try not to promote YouTube on Nostr at all. We have nostr.build and flare.pub for hosting video media.

If content creators aren't going to put their videos on Nostr, then fuck em, we'll do it for them.

Use this app to rip videos from YouTube, Twitter, or pretty much any other site:

https://github.com/deniscerri/ytdlnis/releases/tag/v1.7.1

Then use this app to compress the video for upload:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=me.aravi.compressor

If the file is under 100MB, you can upload it to Flare.

If it's larger, or if otherwise you just want it to play natively in most Nostr clients, you can upload it to nostr.build. You'll need a paid Nostr build account to upload large files, but you should have one of those anyways, fren. If you've been a Nostr build freeloader up until now, well now you have another reason to support them.

Fuck YouTube. Don't give them more traffic when we can host media natively on Nostr. LFG! 💜⚡🚀

you actually don't need to even upload youtube videos to flare, you can just paste the link (the second option in upload) which will just embed it.

Obviously not ideal for anything serious as it'll just go down if youtube deletes / suspends account.

Do we have any idea what flare's policy will be re: copyrighted material that is uploaded tho? (maybe not an issue atm, but if it gets popular)

are you sure because its refusing to do youtube videos

there was an update since i posted this that gave a warning not to upload youtube videos that weren't yours, so i stopped. there may be another update that just stops youtube embeds altogether since then, not sure

I just rip the YouTube videos and upload them directly. Fuck em.

Fair enough:)

I doubt flare is on anyone's radar lol

Not yet. I'll be the reason why Zach starts getting hit with takedown requests eventually. Will it be an artist or music label? Or will it be Tucker Carson's lawyers? Who knows. Should start taking bets on this. 🤣

Do you know how to see your balance on flare? I uploaded one video but have no idea how many gbs I have left

No there's no way to know yet. He needs to add a storage meter to the account settings section. For now you just keep uploading until you hit your limit, and it will prompt you to buy more storage at that point. I gotta be pretty close. A few of my largest videos are just linked from Nostr build though.

I get the impression flare is a prototype anyway, not sure what the plan is for it, but don't see it growing beyond a fraction of most users lol

But you never know maybe there's some automated crawlers or whatever looking for stuff to take down

I did actually tag him in a previous post about his thoughts on this, but got no reply.

Lol I see.

I also noticed there's no way of taking down my own videos (which I've just linked from YouTube, not uploaded) to even help him lol.

I think the potential issue even with embeds would be about being able to tip the person adding, rather than the actual creator of the content (?)

(Tbh I'd still really like to see a massive funded project like odysee, but somewhat unlikely and a huge task.)

Have you checked out peertube?

Yes can't delete the Nostr event of course but there needs to be a way to delete the hosted media file.

Receiving payment for media that is not yours is probably going to be problematic eventually when it gets noticed.

There's a couple full concerts that I posted where I put a link to the artist's merch site in the description. That seems fair to me.

Yeah I thought, yeah you can't delete event, but you could take it off of flare(?)

Maybe this is solvable with using relays that accept deletions, like that 'nos' client feature? 🤔
