Is taking food over at funerals a southern thing or is that universal?

I experienced the same both in the south and in Taiwan.
More common for a wake than a funeral round my parts.
Not sure but it is a kind gesture. It was really nice for ppl to do that when my mom passed away.😢 I do miss her.
