Opinion:

Public display of zaps to a profile or note should be optional at the protocol level and the default setting should be "off".

Here's why:

Many people rely on zaps for support but need/want financial privacy.

I posit that most people don't want their friends, enemies, neighbors, and tax collectors to know this information.

What are your thoughts?

On damus will be gone soon, unfortunately

i think* the info is inherently public, correct me if i'm wrong, but it would be nice to toggle display on profile

A well known Bitcoiner has zapped me twice by going directly to my profile instead of through my actual post. I figured this was why he did it and I see the logic behind it. I don’t know if making that the default is the best option though.
