Are they really thin compared to the avg tortilla chip? I tried one with avocado oil the other month and was underwhelmed

No. Perfect, IMO.
And these are more traditional looking/feeling and are also good. I prefer the round ones myself, but both very good. I usually buy one of each bag. Family seems to like them both equally.
