Made in Abyss is visually beautiful, but like watching it for ten minutes makes it really obvious what the author's proclivities are. The guy that suggested it was obviously fucking with you.

A whole lot of books are that way. I remember reading a lot of old “classics” from the postwar period in school, used to be surprised at how titillating they were for no reason. People even talk about how that Stephen king book had the preteen subway orgy in it, and bend backwards to rationalize how they all totally needed to plow the one girl in the group for the story’s sake.
People talking about going through all the Nebula award winning stories report just about the same: Lots of perversion, oddly enough pretty distributed across the genders.
The more I see of older media, the more I’m struck by how dirty and inappropriate it’s always been. The lack of attention to written works let them get away with much worse than you’d see on screen later.
