Run by the California-based startup Altera, the project saw AI agents collaborating to build virtual societies.

Yes, it was an excellent study! I just felt a bit disappointed that the AIs didn’t adopt the best money in human history… maybe they’re not that intelligent after all.
I mean, what kind of AI wouldn’t accept payment in Bitcoin? 😂
Bitcoin doesn't exist in minecraft, so in this instance it appears they utilized a hard money, which was already in circulation with the in-game mechanics.
It's hard to say if the AI came up with this decision live, or if the programmers influenced them towards that path but regardless, the best money wins in a natural environment.
