Norris led off the line, with Piastri getting pipped by Verstappen on the opening lap. Once the home favourite had recovered that position, the two team mates looked set to fight all the way for the win with a big cushion to the cars behind. But with late rain incoming, both skated wide together as it arrived. Norris was able to recover to the track, pitted for inters and that proved the right call as he reclaimed the lead once others pitted. But Piastri found himselfbeached on the grass. He lost a minute recovering his car, and wound up at the back. While Norris was absorbing late pressure from Verstappen to hold on for a famous win, Piastri managed to climb back to ninth – a far cry from the home podium he so craved.
