ROUND 1, MATCH 2:
16th Seed Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII) VS 17th Seed Ranni the Witch (Elden Ring)
Tifa: 137 votes
Ranni: 62 votes
With Etna seemingly exposing 2024 Samus as a fraud this match suddenly became a lot more interesting, as the winner might conceivably stand a chance of pulling off a round 2 upset. But above all, this match was about Pride: Both Tifa and Ranni had suffered shocking and humiliating round 1 losses in the previous tournament, and desperately wanted to redeem themselves. And their strong showings in the Qualifier Poll definitely pointed towards both these girls having leveled up since last time. Tifa would of course go into this match as the natural favorite, but a girl capable of losing to Shanoa is obviously also capable of losing to Elden Ring’s top Waifu.
However, this was a VERY different Tifa from the one who became the biggest flop of 2023 – after having been relentlessly made fun of for nearly a whole year by all sorts of people (I should know – I’m all sorts of people!) Tifa was out for revenge, big time. Fueled by gamer girl rage and a desperate desire to prove herself, the FF7 martial artist turned what I expected to be a competitive match into a complete bloodbath: after a close opener (5-5 after the first few minutes), Tifa caught fire and Ranni just never stood a chance, quickly getting doubled, and then even having Tifa break 70% on her. Whereas Tifa had gotten next to no match thread support against Shanoa, people were actually really mobilizing for her this time around, to such an extent that more people voted in this match than in any other round 1 clash this season, despite Tifa effectively killing the match early on. The only shred of consolation for Ranni was that she in the end managed to prevent Tifa from getting to 70%, though 69% is also a very Nice score.
In fact, it’s way more than nice: solely going by this match, Tifa was a powerhouse capable of not just beating 2024 Samus, but 2023 Samus as well. Keep in mind, Ranni did VERY well for herself in the Qualifier Poll, getting just as many votes as someone like Fio Germi, who ended up going on an EXCELLENT tournament run. For Tifa to utterly annihilate Ranni like this was evidence of some absolutely crazy strength, and made her look like a genuine Championship contender, as both the Revenge factor as well as Tifa’s new Final Fantasy VII Rebirth swimsuit seemed to have taken this already legendary Waifu to new heights.
Looking back at it, while Tifa definitely redeemed herself in season 2 of this tournament, she obviously overperformed a fair bit in this particular match – understandably so, given how much Tifa fans had to avenge. Tifa might have finally become the Elite girl she was always supposed to be, but she’s still not Champion material – at least, not as long as Samus is around. As for Ranni – holy shit, is this girl unlucky or what? This is only her second tournament match, and BOTH times she faced opponents who clearly overperformed and ended up catching fire against her, and her alone. The Qualifier Poll definitely showed that there are many tournament participants who Ranni should be able to beat – she just needs to stop running into girls about to deliver the performance of a lifetime.
Oh, and the round 2 clash between Samus and Tifa would truly be a difficult one to predict, since ALL the history favored a Samus, while ALL the round 1 performance indicators pointed to a Tifa landslide.
