Put more simply: you will only be able to request DMs sent by you or sent to you.

This is a first step towards improving metadata privacy for direct messages. nostr:note1ntgdg02fvtswwlegk2g5hhtvcaw5d0rtjhvr79704ev08y0gatgq974pck

But users still have to trust that the relays they send DMs to won’t share metadata with anyone but themselves or the recipient?

Of course. I’m not a magician.

Up to each individual user which relays they trust or don’t trust. For those who demand privacy from the relay operator, the only option may be running their own. For everyone else, this is a large improvement on the scale of metadata leaks on nostr.wine relays.
