What about stucking search on top of either of the two, and preserve 2 columns

That's where it used to be, but I think it's more important to have the page / feed name in the header so you know what you're browsing (also serves as "return to top" button).

I see. That makes sense.

Just that the 3 panes seem cluttered on smaller screens usually.

I think you might still be able to maintain visual prominence of the 2 columns while having just a distinct search bar floating at the very top of the UI. Maybe similarly like some of the shopping sites. Expanding upon search.
