This one's the gold standard IMO. The rabbit hole is deep, but the important parts are all at the surface.

QubesOS is great when you want VMs with hardcore hardware isolation out of the box.

NixOS is great when you just want to do whatever you want, with hardcore reproducibility...including everything that Qubes does with isolation.

How is this OS than Tails? I assume it’s persistent on a hard drive, not loaded into memory only?

I use QubesOS as a daily driver. Before I used to run Debian. However the security guarantees of QubesOS are amazing. It's the easiest way of spinning up (disposable) VMs and keeping various things separate and secure..
