I think people are over worrying. I feel as long as you don't opt into the 3rd party key custody feature. Your good. But another good option is to keep your corn on MULTIPLE hardware devices, all with separate wallets.

I was excited it was my first cold storage and only had nexo before. Set up device at home and to be honest I was so stoked reading instructions. “Check that there is no one in your house, device makes seed no one else but you sees it and you are your own bank” transfer my btc -> ledger, add chain to it and wear it for fun at home “now i am my own bank, proud”
