The first winter we moved up north, the lake we rented our first house on froze solid 14” deep with no snow. On a particularly windy day, I strapped my skates on, tucked our patio umbrella under my arm, and skated out to the point 1000 yards northwest of our beach. When I turned around to come home, I opened the umbrella. When I passed a family who was playing hockey near the shore on my way out, I was doing about 50 knots. They looked at me like I was crazy. It was wild!
