anyone used a Japan Rail Pass?

seems like a great deal if you’re taking a lot of daytrips

こんばんはこうへいさん 🤙

I’ll be using one on my trip in a week, travelling a big portion of the country. Will let you know once I’m back if I feel like the cost is worth it!

thanks!

Depends how many trips you’re doing and how far you’re going vs how long you’re staying.

The 14 day pass for our three bullet train rides and random jr train rides wasn’t worth it for us, so we just loaded an IC card(Suica app) with some yen and bought our bullet train tickets individually on Klook.

The JR pass doesn’t work on all the trains but the IC card works on trains and busses minus the bullet trains.

thanks! looking to take multiple daytrips from tokyo within two weeks

Really depends on how far on the bullet train you’re going. The 14 day pass wasn’t exactly cheap, and I figured we’d need at least 4 trips as far as Osaka to make it worth it.

It’s only available to foreigners. My late aunt was Japanese, and her family called it the “magic pass” when my uncle would come to Japan and get it.

haha

It got a lot more expensive since last year. From what I understand buying the rail pass vs just buying individual tickets is about the same now.

thank you. yea seems like you need to take multiple daytrips to make it worthwhile

Was totally worth it in 2019. Works for a lot of public transit, not just the bullet train.

did the math and it didnt make sense for us even though we were traveling a fair bit. so ymmv --can easily just top up a suica too.

thanks! suica good for long inter city travel?

If youre going to a new city every day or every other day it may work out. Its just not a clear win like it was 10 years ago and suica top ups are fast and easy and your same card works in all major cities and rail lines if your plans end up changing(for example you want to stay extra time in a particular city)

It's been over a decade but I had gotten it when I went and it was great. I travelled all over from Nagasaki, Nagano, Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka and Kagoshima. Like the other comments said, it doesn't work for all trains and only available to foreigners.

Bullet trains are an great way to travrl and food options available and quite nice.
