Muun can be a great wallet, but in a high fee environment like we have now, it can be absolutely brutal. I only use Muun when fees are low. Here’s why:

Muun stores your funds on-chain (and they send a Lightning transaction for you separately). It’s still pretty self-custodial, but not perfect. But the point is that when you have a bunch of small UTXOs, they have to be combined to send in bulk. So all those little “Lightning” zaps you received begin incurring on-chain fees when you send them out. It was going to cost me $40 to send $200 last month.

I would recommend using a “node in the phone” like nostr:npub1xnf02f60r9v0e5kty33a404dm79zr7z2eepyrk5gsq3m7pwvsz2sazlpr5 or Phoenix. Both self-custodial.

They are a bit more technical, but still very easy to use while still learning about Lightning channel use, and no hardware cost besides your mobile phone.
