Making a promise or taking an oath implies that usually you're not to be trusted, therefore you jump through some hoops in order to fool others and ultimately yourself in the process.

I took an oath for the military in 1995 and as children we had the Pledge of Allegiance.

Recently as of last year I went to a Tea Party meeting and the beginning was an invocation of prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Some people think it's a great idea but it's contrary to the words of Jesus so there is that, too.

In basic military training were were given tiny New Testament Bibles of the King James Version with red letters of Jesus that you could read in red blackout light conditions!

So many contradictions.

Yes, thanks for bringing it up. I haven't thought about it in a very long time. I have sinned a few times in this regard. Well, it's never too late to wash that old stuff, innit? I obviously wasn't thinking clearly.
