If I have 500 people I want to keep in touch with, am I supposed to add all 500 of their personal relays? That doesn't sound sustainable. After I hit 20 relays, my Nostr experience tanked. After I hit 30, it became unusable.

Only reaching a part of the network and than still use all that data, it's far from perfect and let's hope they find ways to improve it.
I think this is partially due to running this experiment with clients still in early stages… partially due to running this experiment with public relays with a lot of data and duplicate data.

Yes in a network of 500 people this could be achieved with very few hops if everyone connects to 1 or 2 other people.
