Alby makes things easy but if you run your own node anyway, you have options. I used #Zeus before.

Well, its just a tool so you can access your node. You may need #nwc to make it work with #nostr but its been a while since I played with different options. There is probably new stuff I don't know about

You don't strictly need to use Alby, but it can help bridge the gap with Nostr web apps that don't yet use Nostr Wallet Connect. It also allows you to connect fewer apps via NWC at a time. For me, having just Amethyst and Alby connected via NWC is way better than having 20+ various web apps all connected.

A a wallet backend? Not necessarily, but Alby Hub is probably the most interoperable node out there to work with Nostr clients. Feel free to use other NWC-compatible wallets.

But as a Nostr tool on desktop - Alby Extension is highly recommended! It's free and has independent setup from wallet.
