This predates bitcoin by a lot! It was the norm in the 90s and early 00s, started changing with social networks.
Posting under "real" names magnifies a lot of not so good human tendencies - follow the herd, self-censor, don't rock the boat, and tends to further strengthen one of the most widely spread delusions, that the ego is real and all-important.
Some argue that with anonymity people turn into assholes, but this has never been my experience. Seems to me that it's somewhat like money, in that it tends to magnify things - an anonymous idiot is more of an idiot, but anonymity is not to blame.
But anyway, you are correct, lots of nyms in bitcoinland!
