this is a Yakhchal. Its a Persian invention from a couple millennia ago. The shape is thermally specific. In the winter, after building, ice blocks are cut from nearby lakes, and are stacked in the pit beneath, in an inverted cone shape. once a certain depth of ice is reached, the building will stay cold over the entire spring summer and fall seasons, preserving food stores. the worlds first refrigerators.
