She had brakes, they just were not powered, if it happens again , tell her to use some muscle, they will operate. Same with power steering..just don't turn key off or steering wheel will lock.
For future reference, If it ran out of gas, (maybe fuel gauge was reading incorrectly)you can restart them and get a few more miles down the road usually.
