That or have a grace period where if it's off it's still accepted.

The problem is that people might date their posts in the future by the maximum grace period, so they stay on top of people's feeds longer.

This is more relevant on the client side than relay though

Relays could not store but not send future dated posts

Relays could accept these and store, but only release them to queries when their date comes. Scheduled posts.
