There were guilds in the middle ages. There were Luddites in 1810s.

I'd say the labour unions were a reaction to industrial revolution and large scale employers.

Later corrupted with Marxism, Mafia, and Politics (which all thrive on fiat).

The guilds were primarily established to protect trade secrets from leaking out to other artisans. Information is now free.

Guilds were established to prevent outsiders to do same type of work as they do.

They monopolized their services and sold permits.

They regulated markets, prices and education.

They punished violations of their rules (which they unilaterally imposed) by fees, violence and stigmatization. Sometimes by exiling which was pretty much death sentence.
