What do you call a signal whose frequency is irregular and whose amplitude is erratic?

I've been out of that world for >20 years. Once upon a time, I was an electrical engineer for Motorola in their 2-wqy radio division.

So would this imply a clean signal but perturbation due to outside interference?

What if there is no intereference, and the source is just inherently this way from its source?

(I am speaking in analogies here.)

Both can happen, whether literal or figurative.
