Birth order affects personality. As a middle child, I try to make everybody happy, I seek compromises.
I worry about places like China that had a one child policy. Is that culture severely lacking in the personality traits that tend to develop in second and third place children?

Interesting thought, maybe the same effect still occurs though but more on a community basis. Historically the nuclear family doesn't make much sense so perhaps these different personality traits would occur regardless but just be based on the people in your town/community around you instead

Tribal structures would reemerge in 30 years as nuclear families add a generation. The fact that Dunbar's number is only 150 indicates that once the founding couple of a nuclear family dies, the clan fractures.
Yes there is shared responsibility in small groups, but never to the point where no one knows which child is whose or where they sleep at night. the nuclear family remains as the child's immediate hierarchy and link to the tribe.

Good note and insight. Traits, to expound upon it, often go unnoticed or get lost in the grand scheme of things. Variables often effect these traits too. As a first born, I was brought under the blame of teaching my younger sibling bad things, but not the good. It shaped me into people pleasing, and I dislike that trait because we're always holding the shorter end of the stick. Sucks to be us...
Yes. Little emporers are everywhere. But they're now allowing 3 kids per family (not sure if its for everyone, but certainly a lot are) and some families simply hid some kids from the government.
