based on testing i have done over past few days if you're getting a new PC you should get one with 32GB of RAM that can be upgraded to 64GB in about 3 or 4 years.

i have one PC with 16GB that i feel is working too hard to manage RAM because it has barely enough and one PC with 64 GB that is hard to push to use over 20GB of RAM so both point to 32GB as being the sweet spot RIGHT NOW.

but software gets more ram hungry all the time. and in a few years 32GB may start to feel claustrophobic so make sure you have an upgrade path to 64GB.

any modern desktop should be upgradeable to 64GB but obviously some laptops can't be upgraded at all.
