More relays equals more problems, but less reach. With the Outbox model, which not all clients support yet, clients will do more he ay lifting and pull notes down from relays of the people you follow. You won't need to share a common relay to communicate with someone. This will also drastically enhance decentralization. Several clients support this and more are moving towards it sometime this year.
