This is why we need to not be too hesitant to put forward NIPs that guide relays to become freedom focused and UX friendly, while simultaneously being hardened against attacks, abuse and predation. Good NIPs that get shot down because “we’d have to adapt the relays”, should be evaluated on merit if they are future-proofing the network. Relay software should have toggle GUIs for NIP compliance and feature enabling so that people can configure their relay how they want it to participate in the ecosystem without having to be a server admin to participate. This would let people run their own relay and not depend so heavily on client onboarding for profile/follows/wallet etc.
