Beautiful countries but I think I know what you mean

*countries that charges more than 80% tarrifs

It's entirely related to trade balance not those countries actual tariffs. If the US has a trade surplus they charge 10%. If the US has a trade deficit they charge 0.5x the differential as a percentage of trade.

If the USA is self sufficient & reasonably competitive then this encourages Americans to buy from within the USA. Where this is not the case we end up with musical chairs and importers stop buying cheap shirts from Cambodia and purchase them from somewhere with a lower tariff until they readjust the tariffs in a year. In locales where there is effectively no other choice, e.g. semiconductors from Taiwan, Americans will just be slogged with higher prices.

This is not normally how you would implement tariffs and will be interesting to watch.

indonesia does a lot of export to US, our govt need to figure out something fast, just today gold reached the highest price ever here 👀

Well the only thing you can do to reduce the tariff is reduce the trade surplus, but that doesn't benefit Indonesia at all, unless the USA starts magically selling stuff you're buying elsewhere cheaper.

The most important thing to do is ensure the economy isn't dependent on exporting (or importing) from one country. Of course I say this from Australia where 37% of our exports go to China.

You’re right, and it’s a retarded way of doing things.

US policy has been for companies to decouple from China, it was a national security imperative from Covid. So companies moved things to Vietnam for example and that has resulted in greater trade with Vietnam but they don’t import much from the US - what would they import?

Weapons? They have long partnered with Russia/Soviet Union for that and are trying to remain neutral between China and US.

Pharma? Well they’re a younger healthier country and they don’t care much about IP, no need for US pharmaceuticals.

Cars? They mostly ride scooters and motorbikes, all the traffic is setup for that.

What else are they meant to import from the US?

So of course there is going to be a trade imbalance there and just slapping these tariffs on will bring countries to the negotiating table but they would have done that without such huge disruption too.
