Ex atheist here. Not an admirer of Jordan Peterson, but there's a phrase he uses that I agree with, "I act as if God exists". I feel God is a good way to anchor a basic moral system for most people. It tries to lower time preference amongst believers and gives hope to those who need it when all seems lost. I also believe he gives us free will and is not centrally planning everything.
