Relay.tools is heading the same direction.

Relay-based communities will be like Telegram, but instead of only displaying a chat, it'll have Wiki pages, eBooks, long-form articles, group chats, DMs, eventually perhaps polls, calendar entries, etc. And any new event type could be added. Anything you can write to the relay could be displayed.

That's value-added over a typical messenger app.
