A gentle reminder: As parents become older, seemingly simple things are more difficult for them to accomplish and they are more likely to be frustrated or to be upset more easily than they would have been preciously.

Take time to look around their house for things left undone, it will clue you in to what is difficult for them. Perhaps there is more clutter near the floor because it’s hard for them to bend over and they need some mobility work and stretching to be able to make those things easier. Perhaps objects overhead are hard to reach so the cupboards are dusty from misuse, or you will find things organized differently because they cannot put them back easily…

Take the time to look over their space with a critical eye, and see where you can help, and if there is a root cause you can help the work on…

For almost every challenge there is a solution rooted in mobility. I recommend KinStretch with Beard (funny name but honestly fantastic material) to help your aging parents regain mobility and function and help to preserve their joints and independence

I see my parents move through the their late 70s, and the rate of aging is hard to deal with. But it’s part of life. Especially as my dad has Parkinson’s.

It’s rough… yet at the same time, it helps us have more compassion, respect, and care for them… it shows you just how short life is and how much you need to cherish what you have now 🙏🏼 such a beautiful life

Beautifully said. It’s a wake-up call, in many respects. Life is short, and we all face that, sooner or later. Our culture ignores the reality of the ageing process, and feeds us the lie that if we take this pill or do that exercise regime, somehow we can live forever. Helping an aging parent shows the reality that we can’t control ageing. We’ll all need someone’s help, someday.
