-THE ISLAND LIFE-

“Icarus”, 1946,
Henri Matisse (1869.12 ~ 1954.11),
Collage (paper cutting),
Made in various sizes,
France,
Fauvism,
Georges Pompidou Center.
1. This work may look somewhat
simple as it was created using a
paper cutting technique, but it is
Matisse's representative work that
powerfully expresses human
yearning. In his later years, as his
health deteriorated and his activities
became difficult, the artist produced
many works using colored paper with
the help of an assistant and
published them in a book. These
works are also included in the
collection of works called 'Jazz'.
2. Matisse said, “Scissors are more
sensuous than pencils,” and some of
his works are over 2 meters long.
Looking at it, it can be assumed that
it was designed not only for work
comfort, but also to invent a new way
of working.
3. In the myth, Icarus escaped from the
cave where he was trapped, fixed his
wings made of feathers with wax,
and flew high into the sky. However,
his greed was too much and he got
too close to the sun, and the wax
melted, causing him to fall and die.
-> Isn’t this a work meant to warn
against human greed under the
expansion of capitalism and war?
4. This work depicts the scene of
Icarus falling, and a human heart
expressing longing is expressed in
red on the chest of Icarus, which is
black against a blue sky. The yellow
star patterns represent the remains
of wings, and the falling Icarus is said
to represent an air force pilot who
died during World War II.
