There are a lot of things that don't add up, I sincerely doubt very much that a Bitcoin developer of his stature doesn't understand that his keys should be stored offline.
To lose all his fortune if it was all he looks very normal on twitter, I doubt very much that any of us would carry on as if nothing and not go into a few months of desolation and apathy.
That's why I think its a boating accident. He can't be so stupid to store online his fortune's private keys. But yeah, with a Coldcard this story couldn't be played.
Tax evasion perhaps, erasing the trail of his fortune as well, who knows.
And yes, any hardware wallet saves you from this.
