Just watched The Fly (1986) by David Cronenberg. His sixth movie. The last one in the body horror era. What an incredible movie. The story is excellent. It’s about a scientist who slowly mutates after a teleportation experiment. The special effects are excellent. His best yet. Makeup, costumes, prosthetics, animatronics. Top notch. All of it. No wonder this is one of his most famous works. The creature is absolutely disgusting. Fun fact: Cronenberg plays in the movie.

CGI was used in this one. But only for minor touch ups. The technology was brand new at that time. Not very good. Chris Walas who worked on the effects gets the credit for the movie’s impact.

Nice write up

🤝

It is another one of his when I originally saw as a kid it freaked me out

I can understand that. The creature is disgusting. I think the fact that a normal guy transforms slowly makes it scary

It does, Jeff Goldblum was good in it

Phenomenal. His descent into insanity is amazing. From quirky to insane. Was he known before that one or is it his breakout role?

Not sure, but I think it was his breakout role.

According to grok he was in 17 movies before that breakout role. He kept grinding and it paid off!

😮 I think I have only seen him in a few

Only Annie Hall (1977) and Invasion of the body snatchers (1978). Actually body snatchers I’m not even sure I’ve seen but I really want

to

I looked up his movies, he was big in the 80’s, saw most of them. 🤣

Nice! How was body snatchers? I want to see but I have quite a list to finish first 😂

I remember liking body snatchers, but that was a long time ago

Seems like a good one to add to the list

Another to rewatch

The list is expanding 😂

Good times 😂

That's an awesome movie. Truly scary body horror at the end.

Definitely. I’ve seen more recent body horror movies, before the fly. But now having seen this one I can see how they draw inspiration from it.

I think that one made Goldblum a star too great performances from him and Geena Davis both. It's one of my faves 🤝

This will definitely be a rewatch. A few of that first wave of Cronenberg movies will be. Very curious of the second part of his career: psychological/existential from dead ringers to existenz. So many movies

Let me know before you get to existenz, I'll give it a rewatch for a good discussion.

It’s the 4th one. Soon. I’ll let you know

FYI next one is Crash and ExistenZ afterwards 🫡

It’s Videodrome, Max

Saw that one yesterday. Special effects were really good

And it’s a brilliant story, especially at the time it came out!

So long ago and the effects are great even today. Have you seen the brood? I really like that one

I’ve seen most but I missed the brood. Maybe I’ll give it a watch now that you mention it…

Speaking of body horror type movies, have you seen “The Subtance”? It was crazy.

Yes. I watched it twice already. Fantastic film. It used a mix of practical effects and cgi. But cgi was used just a bit to enhance some scenes. Most of the horror

stuff was prosthetics, makeup and animatronics. The type of movie that someone can watch in 20 years and not feel dated because of the effects
