Block 840000 had over 37 BTC in fees with a block subsidy of only 3.125 BTC.
The minimum fee was a tiny 100 sat/vByte, the highest bid fee was 3.6M sats/vByte. This transaction alone paid 6.73 BTC in fees. An unnecessary waste of a lot of money.
