/nin/ — from the Greek ‘νυν’ (nun), meaning “now, at this time” — is an ongoing performance research project exploring the practice of improvisation for solo violin with the T/ensor/~ system I’ve been developing since 2022/23.

T/ensor/~ (v0.5) is a work-in-progress prototype of a dynamic and interactive performance system I’ve built in Max, combining adaptive DSP and generative processes towards exploring the field of human–computer improvisation.

This short excerpt (closing gesture, really) is from my performance of /nin/ at ICMC Boston 2025, a couple of weeks ago, recorded live and directly from the Max patch (rough mix).

The performance of /nin/ at ICMC ’25 also marked the end of the pre-alpha/alpha phases of the T/ensor/~ system, initially developed as part of a six-month artistic research study titled ‘Improvisation Technologies and Creative Machines: The Performer–Instrument Relational Milieu’ (ITCM), supported by the UK’s AHRC Creative Informatics (Small Research Grants 2022).
