what do you think of this github repo https://github.com/Lissy93/awesome-privacy ?

so glad you posted this. absolutely it is another awesome privacy and security resource. i'm a big fan of Alicia (Lissy93) who is also the creator of my favorite selfhosted dashboard app #dashy

https://github.com/Lissy93/dashy

this dashboard is new to me 🙏

but I also like the personal security checklist https://github.com/Lissy93/personal-security-checklist

I never understood how tor which is funded by the US government and uses an algorythm created by US navy could be considered as a tool against surveillance. Maybe if you live in china you can avoid the chinese government surveillance, but avoiding surveillance in general? No fucking way. The opposite is more possible

i hear ya. that's a valid concern. however, the cia also uses tor to protect their own online traffic, so i feel it is most likely that the us gov is funding tor's development while simultaneously trying to break it.

i am a big proponent of whonix on qubes, and tor has served many people well (myself included) for many years not to mention, Ed Snowden.

i take the approach of always assuming compromise and then mitigating risk. no tool is impenetrable, all have their strengths and limitations. and, i feel tor is a significant bolster for infosec best practices and one of the best tools for the open web and privacy that we've ever had

Well cia is part of the US government also, so what do you mean? Are you saying that they also use something else? Snowden was also part of the US government in that way. Dies he use it now? I don't know, i would like to know his take

yes i know. that is my point. the cia uses tor and so does ed snowden. he is a huge proponent of tor and uses it every day. he won't even connect to nostr over clearnet.

check this out:

Thanks. Let's read. I maybe come back again

Yes i read. That is known stuff and they don't answer the hard questions. I am really curious now about the reasons Snowden uses tor as you say. But anyway i am not a security. I have the feeling though that if tor will ever be proposed to russian spies in US they will laugh.

Thanks for the conversation if there is nothing more to be added

ofc. thank you as well.

also, there are articles and posts of him discussing tor and some videos i have seen where he addresses the questions/concerns you mention. his reply is often short and something like, it's worked out pretty well for him so he recommends and uses it. pv 🤙🏻
