I speculate that the Venezuelan opposition went to Trump and pledged the resources to pay for the military operation. After 26 years of oppression, and no hope in their own military, there was no other option. It’s not perfect but it’s rational.

It’s the lesser evil to be a colony of the US as to be a colony of Cuba/China/Iran.
