• character limits are generally sufficient
• they obfuscate the link (which the security- & privacy-conscious will avoid)
• they add an unnecessary 3rd-party point of failure
• that 3rd party can track/spy on traffic
• some, like those ending in .ly, are hosted in countries (e.g. Libya) with regimes with questionable political motives for tracking/filtering traffic
